Director of Nursing (Deputy Associate Executive Director - Nursing Services)

Responsibilities/ Duties:

Administrative

  • Develop, plan, coordinate and administer policies and procedures as directed by the Associate Executive Director of Nursing Services / Health Affairs and in conjunction with all relevant aspects of Nursing Services activities. Oversee the implementation and evaluation of the core standards of care, policies and procedures

  • Ensure that all nursing areas comply with hospital policies and regulatory requirements

  • Ensure that the principles and standards common to international accreditation organizations (e.g. JCIA) are being implemented and maintained at all times. Collaborate with the establishment of performance standards by which to measure effectiveness, efficiency and outcomes of Nursing Services activities

  • Develop and implement short and medium-term tactical goals to ensure achievement of organizational / departmental strategic goals

  • Develop and subsequently implement after approval, Nursing operating budget for the area of responsibility and/or assigned by the Associate Executive Director Nursing Services

  • Cooperate with functional planning, and budgeting, and carry out scheduling for the department as directed, and maintain necessary records and monitor accordingly as follows:Consult and inform Associate Executive Director Nursing Services / Senior Management of operational problems related to the hospital / departments and recommend changes in administrative policies to carry out hospital objectives effectively

    • Provide direction in implementing allocated resources for the provision of nursing care

    • Identify priorities for resource allocation

    • Implement the process for determining the appropriate numbers and qualifications of nursing and support staff to provide patient care reflecting census and acuity trends

    • Implement the preparation and maintenance of divisional reports consisting of periodic statistical data, and various ad-hoc reports as required by Nursing Services

  • Ensure the efficient, economic and quality performance of assigned areas of responsibilities to support and provide quality healthcare services. Collaborate in the assessment of the effectiveness of educational and competency assessment programs

  • Ensure the activities of Nursing Department correlate to the activities of Nursing Services and other divisions and departments in the hospital

  • Prepare and submit any recommendations or proposals for the improvement of the operation of Nursing Departments / Services to the Associate Executive Director Nursing Services

  • Co-development of standards of performance; evaluate performance, and initiate and /or make recommendations for personnel action. Co-develop, direct and support a multi-disciplinary, coordinated approach to patient care

  • Supervise the performance of all (nursing) staff in relation to the area of assignment and oversee all personnel related matters. Where needed collaborate in the development of mechanisms, performance monitoring in relation to patient satisfaction, recruitment and retention and staff development

  • Deputize for the Associate Executive Director of Nursing Services and perform other job related duties as requested

Education & Research

  • Ensure that the nursing care provided in the area of responsibility is consistent with patient/family needs, nursing services policies and procedures, and with current best practices and research findings

  • Facilitate and promote an environment for conduct of research and scientific inquiry within the agreed professional practice model

Quality

  • Ensure nursing divisions’ activities meet with and integrate with Nursing Services and organizational requirements for quality management, health and safety, legal stipulations, environmental policies and general duty of care

  • Identify changes necessary to improve effectiveness, initiate appropriate changes and remove barriers to change

  • Lead and develop systemic process for monitoring, evaluating and improving the quality and evaluating activities within Nursing Services

  • Support and collaborate with the development and implementation of organization-wide systems programs

  • Facilitate a shared accountability approach to patient safety

  • Perform other job related duties as required

Qualifications Required:

  • Master Degree in Nursing / Healthcare Administration or in a related discipline

  • Registered Nurse with a current Nursing License

Experience Required:

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in health service setting, five (5) years of which in progressive senior administrative and managerial/supervisory role, with at least two (2) years in a comparable organization

  • Ability to demonstrate and utilize motivation techniques, coaching and mentoring to continually develop a nursing management team with strong leadership

  • Ability to demonstrate to develop and promote teamwork throughout the organization that resolves and manages conflict
