Head Nurses are responsible to Director of Nursing and assist in the management of a defined area of organized nursing services. Head Nurses allocate available resources to promote efficient, effective, and compassionate nursing care, provide input into executive – level decisions, and keep staff informed of executive – level activities.
Head Nurses coordinate activities between defined areas and provide clinical and administrative leadership, and expertise. They facilitate an atmosphere of interactive management and the development of collegial relationships among nursing personnel and others. They serve as a link between nursing personnel and other health care disciplines throughout the organization.
To fulfill the responsibilities above, the Head Nurse, in collaboration with nursing personnel and members of other disciplines, engages in the following activities:
Provides guidance for and supervision of personnel accountable to the Head Nurse.
Coordinates nursing services with the services of other health care disciplines.
Assumes responsibility for staffing and scheduling personnel. Assignments reflect appropriate utilization of personnel.
Evaluates performance of personnel
Fosters a climate conducive to education experiences for nurses and students
Fosters peer review
Evaluates the quality and appropriateness of care
Participates in nursing and organizational policy formulation and decision making.
Facilitates participation of staff in nursing and organizational policy formulation and decision-making.
Accepts organizational accountability for services provided to recipients.
Assures appropriate orientation, education, and continuing professional development for personnel
Participates in the selection, and retention of personnel.
Participates in planning and monitoring the budget for their defined area (s).

1. Serves as clinical resource and role model/mentor in the delivery of patient care.

2. Demonstrates working knowledge of resource consumption.
1 Accurately uses staffing matrix and adjusts staffing mix to reflect the needs of the patients.
2 Completes and/or approves monthly schedule and daily staffing sheets.

4 Demonstrates ability to evaluate monthly / quarterly budget reports.
5 Coordinates staffing efforts with the Staffing Coordinator, Director of Nursing, and House Supervisor to ensure adequate staffing by competent caregivers.
3. Assists in management of the patient care unit as related to the administrative aspects or organizing, developing and directing.

3 Assists and supports staff in developing and maintaining competency.

7 Actively participates in Unit based meetings and planning sessions.

4. Promotes the development of clinical and leadership skills of the Staff Nurse, trainees, and students.
1 Performs counseling and disciplinary action functions.
2 Completes performance evaluation in a timely manner.
3 Formulates and evaluates staff members’ achievement of goals during performance appraisal process.

5 Works closely with registered staff to assess level of functioning/competency/ customer satisfaction skills.

5. Participates in the Performance Improvement process to improve patient outcomes
1 Monitors compliance with and recommends changes to ensure compliance with corporate Policy and Procedure, Nursing standards and Nursing Policies and Procedures.
2 Advocates organizational processes that allow for creativity in the development of alternative plans for achieving desired client – centered, cost – effective outcome.
3 Assists in the development of unit specific patient care programs; Policies and Procedures that describe how patient care needs or patient populations receiving care are assessed, evaluated and met.

15. Follows Infection Control procedures at all times.
1 Strictly adheres to Standard Precautions at all times as applicable.
2 Washes hands and other skin surfaces with soap and water thoroughly and immediately if contaminated with blood or other body fluids and before and after patient contact.
3 Disposes of sharps in puncture resistant boxes
4 Uses appropriate barriers precautions when participating in invasive procedures. Wears gloves, goggles, and surgical masks for certain procedures as per infection control policy.
5 Ensures that all specimens of blood and body fluids are put in a well – constructed container with a secure lid to prevent leaking during transport and places specimen containers in biohazardous coded plastic bag for transport.
6 Adheres to isolation procedures and techniques at all times as applicable.

17. Accepts supervisory responsibility for own department functions and promotes hospital – wide leadership image.
1 Follows policy and procedure for recruitment and interviewing of all potential new hires with the approval of Administration and Personnel Department.
2 Responsible for ensuring all new employees attend orientation on their first day of work.
3 Responsible for monitoring competency levels of employees and providing staff development through education.
4 Conducts monthly staff meetings, following the CRAE format and keeps minutes and attendance logs on file
5 Submits all completed employee performance reviews to Nursing Administration in a timely manner.
6 Notifies supervisor and Personnel Department of all disciplinary action. Documents clearly all-disciplinary action and submits originals to Personnel Department while keeping copies in departmental file.
7 Responsible for communicating, monitoring compliance of all hospital/departmental policies and procedure to each employee within their sector.
18. Is prepared to meet all crisis situations in a calm therapeutic manner
1 Knows the crash cart status and location at all times. Ensures that nurses adhere to standards for checking and replenishing the crash cart when assigned.
2 Identifies emergency drugs and their location on the crash cart. Knows their use side effects.
3 Identifies equipment and explains its proper use and application.
4 Initiates CPR correctly and without delay.
5 Ensures that events are documented accurately on the code sheet.

Job Requirements Educational Qualifications & Certificates
Minimum 3 years Nursing Diploma after High school
Associate degree in Nursing in Qatar with completion of the Internship program in Nursing Education and Research Department
Bachelors Degree in Nursing or equivalent
Valid Nursing License from the Country of Origin
ILS / PLS / APLS / ACLS preferred but will be offered as relevant as part of orientation
Two years supervisory or management experience in a relevant clinical speciality plus
Three years Clinical experience in a clinically relevant specialty;
Working knowledge of the Performance Improvement process.
English – reading, writing, spoken – proficient
Arabic (Preferred but not essential)
