Hospital Chief of Staff

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Ensures the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of clinical services and professional performance of physicians at the facility level.

  • Enforces the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations, implementing sanctions where indicated, and promoting compliance with procedural safeguards where corrective action has been requested or initiated.

  • Calls, presides at, and is responsible for the agenda and leading of all Medical Staff meetings.

  • Appoints from the facility Medical Staff, committee members for all standing and special medical staff, committees, except where otherwise provided by the Medical Staff Bylaws.

  • Works in conjunction with the Executive Director of the Hospital to assure the delivery of high quality care and service at the facility.

  • Oversees implementation of processes for continuous quality improvement activities, continuing professional education programs and professional performance review at the facility level.

  • Aids in coordination of medical staff activities with administration, nursing, and other patient care services at the facility level and across facilities.

  • Provides clinical input into facility-level planning, program, service/budget development.

  • Ensures effective implementation of clinical credentialing and privileging at the hospital.

  • Provides oversight of physician recruitment resource utilization and peer review.

  • Provides oversight of medical service monitoring, physician performance and addressing deficiency.

  • Participates in hospital specific Medical Executive Committee, and potentially is the Chairman of the Medical Executive Committee.

  • Serves as an ex-officio member of all other Medical Staff committees. As an ex officio member of such committees, the Chief of Staff will have no vote, unless his or her vote in a particular committee is otherwise required by the Medical Staff bylaws.

  • Represents opinions, policies, concerns and needs of facility medical staff to Medical Director.

  • Able to react to change and handle other essential tasks as assigned.

  • Develops and maintains effective internal and external public relationships.

  • Serves on liaison committees with the Governing Body and Management, as well as outside licensing or accreditation agencies.

  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Medical Director, the Medical Staff Bylaws, or the Medical Executive Committee.

  • Works with Engineering to contribute to hospital design.

  • Investigates complaints against Medical Staff, and takes appropriate steps to resolve.

  • Communicates with members of the public through the media for issues that are related to clinical activities in the hospital.

  • Ensures the efficient flow of information between management and hospital staff.

  • Participates in the development of hospital policies.

Qualifications/Skills Required:

  • Minimum: Medical degree

  • Required Certification or Licensure or Registration: License to practice medicine in Qatar

  • Computer Skills: Intermediate, o Proficient in the use of email and the Internet for research purposes.

  • Key Competencies: At least 3-5 years in a senior medical management administrative post. Strong knowledge of Performance Improvement Processes and International Standards. Clinical, Fiscal, and Human Resources Managerial experience. Ability to plan strategically and implement new processes and programs through data analysis and cost effective interactions.

  • Problem Solving / Decision Making: Is empowered to make routine operational decisions that will support the leadership of the hospital. Is accountable to exhibit sound decision making in a variety of situations, degrees of complexity. Is empowered to delegate authority and accountability, as appropriate Demonstrates creativity to solve problems.

Experience Required:

  • Minimum: 7 years progressive clinical and physician leadership responsibility in a healthcare facility
