Consultant - Emergency Medicine

  • Examines, diagnoses, and treats illnesses and injuries in the acute care setting. Provides immediate diagnosis and resuscitation care for life-threatening conditions, and directs the provision of such care in the pre-hospital setting.

  • Provides medical screening for every patient who presents to the emergency department and request examination for a medical condition, or has such a request made on their behalf. This with the implied understanding that triage is not equivalent to medical screening, and that the intent is to determine, whether, or not an emergency medical condition exists.

  • Provides diagnosis and care on the basis of medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests. Provides supportive care to patients with serious medical and surgical conditions until the care of that patient can be assumed by the appropriate admitting physician for that condition.

  • Manages the patient flow in the emergency department, ensure that triage levels designation are appropriate, and continuously monitor the status of patients waiting to be seen to ensure no material deterioration occurs prior to assessment and evaluation.

  • Provides definitive or interim care for conditions that, while not life-threatening, cause discomfort or risk of worsening to the extent that such care cannot be reasonably delayed until the next available access into a more appropriate source for care.

  • Works with disaster planning and hospital command personnel to design effective pre-hospital and initial hospital care and triage activities for disaster and mass casualty situations.

  • Functions as the pre-hospital care provider and supervisor in disaster and mass casualty situations, and provides triage expertise and immediate care skills at the hospital access level.

  • Provides training to medical and nursing personnel in aspects of resuscitations, including identification and treatment of cardiac, traumatic, and infectious emergencies.

  • Participate in the operation of hospital emergency care services. Supervises patient care activities of physicians, nurses, technicians, and other staff assigned to that area.

  • Ensures that the emergency care system provides quality care and meets the needs of the patient population it serves.

  • Works with Nursing Services to ensure optimal training and skill performance by all personnel assigned to the emergency services.

Education/Qualifications Required:

  • MBBS or MBChB or equivalent qualification from an accredited institution

  • Successful completion of an ACGME accredited residency or fellowship in Emergency Medicine 

  • Current certification or active participation in the examination process leading to certification in Emergency Medicine by a Board of Emergency Medicine

  • Current Medical License

  • Current Life-saving certifications: BCLS, ACLS, PALS, ATLS etc.

Experience Required:

  • At least two (2) years Experience Post Qualification if qualifications from (Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom & United States of America)

  • Other countries not listed above: At least five (5) years Experience Post Qualification
