Data Manager (Oncology)

The data manager performs a variety of tasks in this position that will enhance the quality of the data gathered in a research study. These responsibilities include designing forms, monitoring protocol accrual, abstracting data, entering data onto protocol-specific forms and/or specifically designed computerized data-entry screens, assuring the quality and the integrity of the data, and providing investigators with interim and summary reports. In addition, the data manager can be responsible for the management of a computerized clinical data base system, including the training of users and the designing of basic reports for the investigators. A nurse, functioning as a data manager, who understands research methodology, is detail oriented, and is well organized, could be a valuable asset to the clinical trials team in the successful management of any clinical study. 

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field

Experience Required:

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience directly related to clinical research and data management

Special Skills Required:

  • Computer skills

Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Develops and designs methods and procedures for collecting, organizing, interpreting, and classifying information for input into computer and retrieval from computer, utilizing knowledge of symbolic language, optical or pattern recognition, database construction and retrieval methods.

  • Develops alternate designs to resolve problem in input, storage or retrieval of information, utilizing knowledge of electronic data processing principles.

  • Performs need assessment activities and work with other information systems personnel to determine feasibility of development of new databases or enhancement to existing databases.

  • Develops specifications for data capture and input, monitors input to ensure consistency, quality and integrity of data.

  • Provides technical assistance and training to department authorized staff in the use of application systems.

  • Makes recommendations for on-line program enhancements, assists in testing and implementation of modifications and enhancements.

  • Supervise and oversees the work of programming and/or data-entry staff.

  • Perform other duties as may be required by the Department Chairman.
