Summary
As a Consultant in Geriatric Medicine, you will provide expert medical care for elderly patients, managing complex chronic conditions, frailty, and cognitive disorders. You will work alongside a multidisciplinary team to enhance the quality of life for older adults, focusing on both preventive and therapeutic approaches.
Education / Qualifications Required
- Basic medical degree from a recognized institution.
- Post-qualification certification from one of the following:
- USA: American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) – Geriatric Medicine Certification
- Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) in Geriatric Medicine
- UK & Ireland: CCT in Geriatric Medicine / GMC Specialist Register
- Australia & New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in Geriatric Medicine
- Western Europe: Equivalent certification to the above
Experience Required
- Minimum (3) Three years post-board certification for candidates from the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and France (DES).
- Minimum (5) Five years post-board certification for candidates from Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Austria, Netherlands, Greece, and France (DIS).
License & Certifications
- Current and in Good Standing Medical License to practice in the country of residence.
- BLS/ACLS Certification (Basic & Advanced Life Support).
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Diagnose and manage age-related conditions, including frailty, dementia, osteoporosis, and polypharmacy.
- Develop personalized treatment plans for elderly patients, addressing both medical and functional needs.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, and palliative care specialists.
- Assess and manage cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
- Provide rehabilitation and fall prevention strategies for at-risk elderly patients.
- Participate in on-call duties for acute geriatric care and medical emergencies.
Academic & Research Responsibilities
- Train and mentor junior doctors, medical students, and allied health professionals in geriatric care principles.
- Engage in clinical research focused on aging, frailty, and age-related diseases.
- Stay updated with evidence-based best practices in geriatric medicine.
Administrative & Quality Improvement
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, ethical standards, and patient safety protocols.
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives to enhance geriatric care services.
