Summary

Responsible for leading and supervising the delivery of high quality evidence-based care; effectively and efficiently diagnosing, managing and treating all patients placed under the post holder’s care. The Consultant Physician is expected to be an example of clinical excellence within his or her specialty and to provide leadership and training for junior medical staff.

Education/Qualification:

  1. Basic medical degree from recognized institution
  2. Post-qualification certification
    • Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand. 
      • USA: American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)
      • Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (FRCPC)
      • UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register
      • Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP)

Experience:

  • Minimum 6 years current practice in area of specialty after obtained any of the above qualifications in USA, Canada, Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand

License:

  • Valid and in a good Standing License in current country of practice

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Managerial/Administration

  • Supports, implements, and follows all hospital, departmental, and divisional initiatives, policies, and procedures.
  • Helps lead and implement the organization’s performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes.
  • Assists with scheduling and supports the Division Chief in ensuring that adequate medical coverage for heart failure services is always provided.
  • Attends Divisional and multidisciplinary heart team meetings as required.
  • Assists the Division Chief in the recruitment of cardiology/heart failure medical staff when appropriate.
  • Participates in strategic planning for the Heart Failure Program, including resource allocation and service development.
  • Assumes other administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Division Chief.

Technical

  • Oversees the clinical activities of junior medical staff within the heart failure service and assumes responsibility for the care they provide.
  • Manages complex heart failure cases including acute decompensation, advanced pharmacologic therapy, device management (e.g., ICD, CRT), mechanical circulatory support (e.g., LVAD), and pre-/post-heart transplantation care.
  • Complies with all established hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, diagnostic procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow-up practices.
  • Leads ward rounds; reassesses inpatients and outpatients on a regular basis in line with cardiology best practice.
  • Accurately documents all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely manner in accordance with established procedures.
  • Reviews results of relevant investigations such as echocardiography, cardiac MRI, laboratory data, and hemodynamic monitoring, and modifies treatment plans accordingly.
  • Collaborates with cardiac surgeons, electrophysiologists, transplant teams, imaging specialists, rehabilitation services, and other relevant specialties.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary heart failure and transplant listing meetings to ensure holistic patient care.
  • Ensures thorough preparation of patients for all procedures including obtaining informed consent.
  • Accepts clinically appropriate referrals from emergency, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, and external hospitals.
  • Participates in and ensures provision of out-of-hours (on-call) coverage on a rotational basis, including evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Communicates complex clinical information to patients and their families (with consent) in an understandable and empathetic manner.
  • Maintains strong working relationships with all members of the healthcare team and promotes collaboration in patient management.
  • Performs other heart failure or cardiology-related clinical responsibilities as assigned.

Quality & Safety

  • Leads quality improvement initiatives within the Heart Failure Program.
  • Supports a culture of regular clinical audit, including reviewing heart failure outcomes, readmission rates, and treatment adherence.
  • Encourages use of audit results to improve heart failure care delivery.
  • Supports the reporting, investigation, and learning from untoward incidents, near misses, and complications.

 

Education

  • Promotes and assists in the instruction, guidance, and supervision of junior medical staff, residents, and fellows in cardiology/heart failure.
  • Facilitates training in heart failure management, device therapy, and transplant medicine for relevant clinical staff.
  • Demonstrates commitment to Continued Medical Education (CME) by attending and contributing to local and international cardiology conferences.
  • Promotes and participates in clinical research and publication in the field of heart failure and advanced cardiac therapies.
  • Keeps up to date with current literature, guidelines, and advances in heart failure, transplantation, and cardiac device technologies.
