Summary

Responsible for diagnose and treat blood disorders involving anomalies of the blood cells, the bone marrow, and other organs that are engaged in the synthesis of blood

Education/Qualifications Required:

  1. Basic medical degree from recognized institution
  2. Post-qualification certification
    • Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.  
      • USA: The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)
      • Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (RCPS-C)
      • UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register
      • Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP)
      • Western Europe: Equivalent certification to the above

Experience Post-Qualifications:

  • Minimum Three (3) years after board/equivalent certification in USA, Canada, Ireland, UK, Australia, New Zealand and France (DES).
  • Minimum Five (5) years after board/equivalent certification in Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Austria, Netherlands, Greece and France (DIS).
  • Experience in Bone Marrow is a must

License:

Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Daily rounds on inpatient service.
  • Documents treatment plan with brief admission note, writes progress notes, or cosigns junior staff notes.
  • Supervises junior staff or performs diagnostic/therapeutic procedures line bone marrow aspirates biopsies, and lumbar punctures with intrathecal administration of chemotherapy.
  • Performs bed side teaching of junior staff.
  • Writes or cosigns junior staff chemotherapy orders, after verifying for accuracy.
  • Signs discharge summaries and dictates death summaries for his patients.
  • Provides primary outpatient care in two (2) clinics per week as per schedule.
  • Covers additional outpatient clinics of consultants on leave as per schedule.
  • Performs bone marrow harvests.
  • Participates in night and weekend on-call duties as per schedule.
  • Discusses plan of care, treatment options, no code orders, with patients and their families.
  • Requests consultations from other services as needed.
  • Provides consultations in hematology to all other services at their request.
  • Participates in departmental education and administrative activities.
  • Writes abstracts and manuscripts for submission for publication to peer-review journal.
  • Writes and conducts retrospective and prospective clinical trials.
  • Participates in self and others’ education, training and development, as applicable.
