Summary

A transfusion medicine specialist oversees blood banking services, ensures safe and effective transfusion practices, and supports hospital-wide transfusion protocols. Typically part of a Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine division, this role is operational and clinical in nature.

Education/Qualifications Required:

  1. Basic medical degree from recognized institution
  2. Post-qualification certification
    • Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.  
      • USA: The American Board of Hematology Transfusion Medicine
      • Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (FRCPC – Hematology Transfusion Medicine)
      • UK and Ireland: CCT/CCST Specialist Register – Hematology Transfusion Medicine
      • Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP -Hematology Transfusion Medicine)
      • Western Europe: Equivalent certification to the above

Experience Post-Qualifications:

  • Minimum Three (3) years after board / equivalence certification in USA, Canada, Ireland, UK, Australia, New Zealand and France (DES)
  • Minimum Five (5) years after board / equivalence certification in Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Austria, Netherlands, Greece and France (DIS).
  • Fellowship training in Transfusion Medicine
  • Strong understanding of immunohematology, blood banking regulations, and transfusion protocols.

License:

Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct and manage hospital blood bank operations
  • Oversee blood component selection, crossmatching, antibody screening, and compatibility testing.
  • Manage inventory and ordering of blood components (RBCs, platelets, plasma, cryoprecipitate).
  • Investigate and report transfusion reactions and hemolytic events.
  • Consult on transfusion indications in complex cases (e.g., massive transfusion, alloimmunization, sickle cell disease).
  • Provide leadership in patient blood management programs and transfusion committees.
  • Liaise with external blood suppliers
  • Participate in regulatory compliance and accreditation inspections
  • Supervise technologists in the transfusion section of the laboratory.
  • May oversee therapeutic apheresis services and stem cell collection programs.
