Summary
Responsible for the diagnosis and interpretation of diseases of the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system. In institutions where hematopathology includes transfusion oversight, the role may include clinical consultation on blood-related disorders and transfusion issues related to hematologic diseases.
Education/Qualifications Required:
- Basic medical degree from recognized institution
- Post-qualification certification
- Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
- USA: The American Board of Hematology Transfusion Medicine
- Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (FRCPC – Hematology Transfusion Medicine)
- UK and Ireland: CCT/CCST Specialist Register – Hematology Transfusion Medicine
- Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP -Hematology Transfusion Medicine)
- Western Europe: Equivalent certification to the above
- Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
Experience Post-Qualifications:
- Minimum Three (3) years after board / equivalence certification in USA, Canada, Ireland, UK, Australia, New Zealand and France (DES)
- Minimum Five (5) years after board / equivalence certification in Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Austria, Netherlands, Greece and France (DIS).
- Experience or exposure to transfusion cases in the hematologic setting is an asset
License:
Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interpret blood films, bone marrow biopsies, and lymph node histopathology.
- Perform and interpret flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, and molecular testing relevant to hematologic disorders.
- Diagnose and classify hematologic malignancies (e.g., leukemias, lymphomas, myeloma).
- Provide consultative input on transfusion needs in hematologic patients (e.g., autoimmune hemolytic anemia, refractory thrombocytopenia)
- Collaborate with hematologists and oncologists in multidisciplinary teams.
- Participate in tumor boards and clinical-pathological meetings
- Participate in committees and other administrative functions as needed
- Occasionally assist with complex transfusion case workups (e.g., DAT testing interpretation, transfusion reactions).
- May supervise or provide oversight to technologists in hematology sections of the lab
