Nursing Shift Coordinator

Responsibilities / Duties:

Clinical Practice

  • Guides patient care activities to be within established hospital, divisional and unit specific guidelines, policies and procedures, standards and protocols

  • Guides patient placement according to patient acuity, nursing skills and resources availability

  • Maintains high visibility (100% clinical presence) with staff/patients on area (s) of responsibility

  • Takes direct and appropriate action in urgent and emergency situations

  • Demonstrates effective communication and collaboration skills when interacting with patients/families, other health care team members and members of other departments

  • Complies with hospital infection control and safety protocols.


  • Maintains awareness of and supports hospital and divisional fiscal and other resource initiatives

  • Coordinates staff to ensure adequate nursing and resources for patient care

  • Initiates the problem solving process and utilizes the nursing/medical administrative chain of command as required

  • Liaisons with other departments to secure appropriate care for patients

  • Informs Nurse Manager and CDNs of all patient/unit issues in timely manner

  • Maintains all records pertaining to the operation of the area of assigned and generates reports as required

  • Educational & Research:

  • Acts as a resource for nursing staff

  • Assumes responsibility for own professional growth

  • Participate in teaching and mentoring of Nursing, Medical and Paramedical students, Interns and Residents


  • Anticipates and acts to maintain a safe environment

  • Assesses the standards of care delivered on units and the staff’s clinical knowledge and skills. Takes immediate corrective action if required and reports finding to nursing managers in a timely manner

  • Complies with and participates in Quality Improvement processes and activities 

  • Professionalism:

  • Serves as a professional role model, teacher and resource person

  • Develops and utilizes professional collegial networking

  • Demonstrates, respect, compassion, and cultural sensitivity to patients/families, other hospital employees, students and faculty

  • Advocates for excellence in patient care

  • Participates actively in nursing and/or hospital committees and work groups

  • Assumes responsibility for own decisions and actions

  • Demonstrates initiative in the performance of duties

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor of Degree in Nursing or equivalent

  • Registered Nurse with current/active license

Experience Required:

  • Minimum seven (7) years post registration experience including two (2) years in comparable management position

Special Skills Required:

  • English Language Skills

  • B Level Arabic Language Skills

  • Intermediate Level Computer Skills
