Summary

Specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal conditions of the lower limbs and feet. More specifically, a podiatrist is trained to be a doctor of podiatric medicine and can perform surgery, prescribe drugs, and order lab tests. A podiatrist can also treat and perform surgery for common foot problems such as ingrown toenails, plantar fasciitis, foot ulcer treatment, corns, calluses and more.

Education / Qualification Required:

  • Bachelor Degree in Podiatry or equivalent discipline from an accredited institution
  • Postgraduate education in Podiatry or Podiatric Practice

Experience Post-Qualifications:

  • Minimum Five (5) years position-related practical experience

License:

  • Current and in a Good Standing License as Podiatry/ Chiropody

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide long-term management of chronic disorders and short term treatment for the relief of painful symptoms for dermatological and other foot related problems (i.e. corns, calluses, verrucae/warts, ingrown toe nails, athletes foot, heel pain, chilblains, gout, or bunions). Implement treatment procedures and the prescription of orthoses, topical chemotherapy, cryotherapy, electro surgery, ultrasonics, specialized dressing and/or exercise therapies, as instructed by physicians and in line with the standards of clinical practice, policies and procedures and accrediting bodies.
  • Liaise with team members (i.e. physicians, podiatric technologist, therapist, nurse, etc.) to discuss patient’s needs and plan of care whenever indicated. Prescribe, produce and fit orthotics and other aid appliances. Conduct therapeutic techniques such as carrying out minor surgery using local anesthesia such as ingrown nail surgery and partial nail avulsion and curettage. Treat and rehabilitate athletes. Apply cast techniques to patients as required.
  • Analyze the location, origin, insertion and function of each nerve, blood vessel, muscle bone, articular surface and ligament in the lower limb and foot including gait abnormalities and diagnostic images (e.g. X-ray, Ultrasound and MRI).
  • Determine and implement the specific podiatric clinical needs of patients and assess the effectiveness of the treatment in terms of functional and safety using a full range of interventional techniques, products and equipment: (i) Surgical Instruments, Dressing treatments; (ii) Orthotic (insole) – materials grinders, and shaping equipment for making orthotics; (iii) X-ray equipment; (iv) Video gait-analysis equipment: running machine and video camera that allows a frame-by-frame analysis of patients walking or running problems.
  • Conduct assessment and understand pathologies for treatment options and/or appropriate referrals and for patient’s lower limb biomechanics. Identify and explain any gait abnormalities and possible etiologies.
  • Participate in the delivery of foot health education pertaining to the prevention and treatment of defects, injuries and diseases, particularly those with diabetes osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Implement patient-centered care to improve health outcomes and reduce costly ineffective treatment modalities.
  • Participate in research ensuring continuous evaluation of clinical practice and service outcomes. Responsible for providing staff development, educational programs and team meetings, providing presentations and contributing input and feedback to support departmental activity.
