Summary

Responsible for coordinate all the administrative and clinical activities of the audiology section.

Education / Qualification:

Required

  • BSc in Speech & Hearing or audiology

Desired

  • MSc in Audiology, Speech & Hearing or communication disorders/Sciences

Experience:

  • Minimum Four (4)  years of experience in field of Speech and Hearing Sciences or in Audiology in a hospital setting
  • Minimum One (1) year demonstrated leadership

License:

  • Current and in a Good Standing License to practice in country of residence.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Managerial

  • Supervising junior staff as per clinical, administrative and related professional policies as applied and implemented in the Section/Department/Facility
  • Maintaining sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment for performance of duties
  • Reporting shortage of materials to supervisor at earliest convenience, ordering and approving replenishments when necessary
  • Assessing and ordering appropriate materials/equipment following discussion with senior staff
  • Might be having budget responsibilities depending on delegation of responsibilities in section/department
  • Coordinating assigned clinical activities such as neonatal hearing screening program by assigning roles to the audiologist and audiology assistant
  • Being involved in the daily management of workload allocation within the specialist area, taking into account the changing/competing demands and making decisions about prioritization of caseloads
  • Conducting and assisting the department head in the performance appraisal of the staff
  • Ordering and taking necessary steps for the procurement of advanced audiological equipment as required
  • Maintaining the monthly and yearly statistics of audiology care

Technical

  • Demonstrating competency in utilization of equipment and in autonomous clinical decision-making, identification, assessment, diagnosis and management (including rehabilitation) of hearing and balance disorders
  • Developing re/habilitation programs based upon various audiology clinical options as per patient needs
  • Working supervised by audiologist/manager, as relevant, but able to perform as an autonomous professional within he Audiology and related speech pathology/rehabilitation team
  • Responsible for providing a comprehensive assessment and rehabilitation service for hearing impaired people. Within this to autonomously prescribe, fit and evaluate assistive listening devices such as hearing aids as part of a re/habilitation program.
  • Performing routine and specialized tests to include pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry, impedance audiometry and related electro-physiological assessments for auditory and vestibular
  • To determine the candidacy for cochlear implant and to do mapping for the cochlear implant.( technical duty for both audiologist and senior audiologist)
  • Making necessary recommendations and referrals for patients and provides appropriate counseling to the patients and their families
  • Dispensing and maintaining digital hearing aids, using applicable guidelines and protocols, to include real ear measurement
  • Conducting daily or periodic checks and calibration of equipment. Recognize report and advice on discrepancies in performance and initiate remedial action in the light of this information. To ensure that the equipment is used in the correct manner to obtain optimum results
  • Updating patient examination history file, recording unusual conditions/limitations, documenting examination time, room number, and technique factors. Recording any relevant clinical information obtained from the patient during the course of the examination that may be of benefit to the consultant when producing the report

Quality & Safety

  • Promoting and maintaining quality in all services and ensures continuous quality improvement measures are in place. Conduct method evaluation/development as per standard policies and procedures
  • Ensuring compliance with all safety and quality control programs and procedures as applicable
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable precautions for environmental safety, infection control, using a series of interventions that minimize or prevent cross infection
  • Maintaining and assisting in enforcing the strictest confidence in relation to patient information whether formally or informally recorded
  • Complying and ensuring that those directly supervised comply with occupational health and safety at work policies and procedures
  • Assisting in the planning and developing policies that guide the service implementation process
  • Practicing within the expressed limits of established policies and procedures
  • Ensuring that SOP (standard operation procedures) and Quality Assurance tests are maintained within all sections
  • Being responsible for documenting all intervention in appropriate format
  • Assisting in the development of clinical audit processes within the service and report on these as agreed. Supporting the promotion of audit and research programs on service implementation, in line with national policy, statutory requirements and service requirements within the facility
  • Communicating in a professional and courteous manner with patients, family and other medical personnel as necessary to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, clarify orders and communicate status
  • Ensuring standards of audiology practice are as per international norms such as those prescribed by the American Audiology Association.

Education

  • Delivering and participating in training and education sessions for department staff, doctors and nurses in the safe and secure handling of drugs and equipment, prescribing (whenever applicable), administration and treatment and management i.e. teaching, induction, peer review, case studies, and clinical presentations
  • Participating in department programs/committees, various hospital committees, and staff meetings
  • Participating in the orientation and training of new employees
  • Ensuring appropriate internal and external sharing of information based on governing policies and procedures
  • Maintaining professional knowledge by attending lectures, seminars or on-line education units
  • Completing and maintaining all regulatory requirements including: licensure and certification and other mandatory training within established time frames
  • Ensuring all members of the department receive adequate clinical supervision as required for their professional and technical development
