Emergency Medicine Senior Consultant and Chair of the Department
Summary:
This Emergency Department physician is the most senior doctor responsible for overseeing the ER team, including consultants, junior doctors, and managing other team members. This role involves ensuring high-quality patient care by diagnosing, treating, managing, and admitting patients under their care. The Senior Consultant collaborates closely with all senior members on issues such as service development, funding, budgets, and staffing, as well as on teaching, training, and academic research priorities. Strong interpersonal skills are essential for achieving clinical and team objectives, making this position integral to the department’s leadership and management.
Education:
- Basic medical degree from recognized institution
- Post-qualification certification
- USA: American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) – ABEM
- Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (FRCPC – Emergency Medicine) or CCFP-EM
- UK and Ireland: CCT/CCST Specialist Register – Emergency Medicine
- Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP)
- The Equivalence of above certification from other Western European countries
Experience:
- Minimum Seventeen (17) years after obtained any of the above qualifications; out of which Five (5) years current experience in leadership Position ( Chair Person, Head of department, Division Head) at Large Trauma Hospital.
License / Certification
- Current and In-Good-Standing License in country of residence / practice is a must.
- Current BLS/ACLS required
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- The Senior Emergency Medicine Physician role, in addition to regular clinical role, is tasked with organizing, monitoring, and maintaining clinical services within the department to ensure the highest level of patient care while optimizing resource utilization. As a role model for physician leadership and management, the Senior Consultant exemplifies the application of medical expertise in patient care.
- Responsibilities include adhering to policies and guidelines, performing duties assigned to a consultant physician, and assuming direct responsibility for patients in their care. The role involves conducting rounds, supervising inpatient and outpatient treatment, and overseeing medical staff within the unit, with regular reporting on unit activities. Additionally, the Senior Consultant participates in committees to enhance services, contributes to departmental development plans, and engages in training programs for medical, technical, and nursing staff. They are involved in planning medical education and research activities, performing specialized interventions, and participating in health education programs. The position also includes scheduling and providing on-call services, assessing medical supply needs, and writing medical reports.
- The Senior Consultant offers guidance to other departments, maintains clinical privileges, complies with revalidation standards, and performs other duties as directed by the department head and approved by the Medical Director.
