Provides quality professional services in the evaluation and treatment of patients with speech, language, cognitive, fluency, voice, swallowing and feeding disorders and associated communication problems.

Education / Qualification:

  • Master's Degree in Speech and Hearing, or Speech Language Pathology, Speech or Communications Sciences & Disorders
  • Bachelor's Degree in Speech Language Pathology

Experience Post Qualifications:

  • Minimum Four (4) years of experience in field of Speech and Hearing Sciences or in Speech Language Pathology
  • Minimum Three (3) years of experience if holding Master's Degree
  • Demonstrate Leadership Skills

License

Valid and in a good Standing License in current country of practice

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Providing comprehensive specialist assessment (including differential diagnosis), treatment and information regarding patients with communication, developmental speech and language delay and disorder, social communication disorder including dysfluency and motor speech disorder and/or swallowing disorders, ensuring full patient involvement, underpinned by a broad range of specialist knowledge and experience
  • Adapting practice to meet individual patients’ circumstances, including due regard for cultural and linguistic differences
  • Demonstrating the ability to reflect on different aspects of patients’s communication and to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness
  • Providing specialist treatment, e.g. Electropalatography (EPG) and Nasometry, as necessary
  • Assessing complex/undifferentiated abnormalities (e.g. Second Opinions) and develop the necessary treatment plans
  • Using investigative skills and a broad knowledge of standardised assessments together with sound, analytical clinical reasoning skills in order to form a baseline measure or differential diagnosis from which to plan a programme of intervention
  • Taking in depth case histories to include medical, social, psychological, educational and developmental information
  • Working as a member of the SLT team providing an efficient and effective service, liaising with internal and external agencies. Providing timely and targeted individualised management, treatment and advice for patients, involving families, carers and educators and providing appropriate recommendations and training to professionals from other agencies and other disciplines
  • Empowering parents, carers and teachers in understanding the nature of the patient’s disability or dysfunction and the impact of this on their learning, communication and behaviour. This entails the use of a communiaction means facilitating the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan as to cascade it to all relevant parties.
  • Employing excellent communication skills to enable patients, many of whom have highly challenging communication impairments to engage in the therapeutic process
  • Updating patient examination history file, recording unusual conditions/limitations, documenting examination time, room number, and technique factors. Recording any relevant clinical information obtained from the patient during the course of the examination that may be of benefit to the consultant when producing the report  
  • Ensuring a productive therapeutic relationship is established with patients, carers and families, agreeing decision-making which is relevant to the patient's management, taking into account challenging communication impairment, challenging behaviour, psychological and emotional state and differing cultural attitudes and expectations
  • Enhancing the performance and capability of others through formal and informal interactions/skilled coaching techniques
  • Supervising junior staff and ensuring their abidance to going rules and policies as applied and implemented in the Section/Department/Facility
  • Trouble-shooting basic equipment faults and make suitable provision for service in the event of equipment failure notifying and in conjunction with the relevant section leads and seniors (e.g. disaster recovery for equipment breakdown)
  • Monitoring the equipment and device usage, flagging any miss manipulation. Authorizing maintenance or backing case study to replace faulty ones
  • Informs supervisor of equipment malfunction and/or need for repair. Documenting all testing procedures
  • Conducting daily or periodic checks and calibration of equipment. Recognise report and advice on discrepancies in performance and initiate remedial action in the light of this information. To ensure that the equipment is used in the correct manner to obtain optimum results
  • Maintaining a necessary inventory of supplies for assigned room or work station, rotation of stock in an orderly fashion, and eliminating outdated items
  • Reporting shortage of materials to supervisor at earliest convenience, ordering and approving replenishments when necessary
  • Maintaining cleanliness of equipment and operating room and ordering all equipment and supplies for any  subsequent use, taking into consideration general facility hygienic and sterilization rules and regulations
  • Applying standard precautions for infection control, using a series of interventions that minimise or prevent cross infection, including effective hand washing/cleansing when appropriate, particularly on entering and leaving clinical areas and between each patient 
  • Maintining a high control over infection, safety and health regulations and making sure that all concerned parties follow the same
  • Being involved in the daily management of workload allocation within the specialist area, taking into account the changing/competing demands and making decisions about prioritization of caseloads
  • Maintaining the strictest confidence in relation to patient information whether formally or informally recorded
  • Leading/project managing the development of new business cases and/or options appraisals in agreed areas
  • Assiting in providing managerial leadership for both clinical and non-clinical issues through consultation and joint working with all grades of staff within the SLT services
