Summary
The purpose of this role is the most senior doctor (apart from the Department Chair and/or Section Head) who practices in a specific specialty and has oversight responsibility for his team of Consultants and junior doctors and manages other team members.
The Senior Consultant specializes in the biochemical aspects of human health and disease. They are responsible for interpreting laboratory results, overseeing clinical biochemistry laboratories, and offering expert consultation on metabolic disorders and other biochemical abnormalities.
Education/Qualifications Required:
- Basic Medical Degree or Bachelor Degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field is the starting point from recognized institution.
- Post-qualification certification
- USA: The American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC)
- Canada: Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (CACB)
- Equivalent certification to the above from Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand
Experience Post-Qualifications:
- Minimum six (6) years of experience post qualifications
- Minimum one (1) or two (2) years of experience in a leadership role (Head of department or equivalent)
License & Certifications
- Current and in Good Standing License / registration to practice in country of residence.
Job Responsibilities/Duties:
- Lead and supervise the operations of the Clinical Biochemistry laboratory.
- Interpret and validate biochemical test results and provide clinical consultations.
- Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to support the diagnosis and management of metabolic and biochemical diseases.
- Ensure adherence to quality control procedures, accreditation standards, and laboratory best practices.
- Participate in the development and implementation of laboratory policies, protocols, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Conduct and support clinical research, audit activities, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Provide education and training to junior staff, residents, and laboratory personnel.
- Review and implement advancements in biochemistry testing, automation, and diagnostic technology.
- Maintain updated knowledge in the field and participate in continuous professional development.
