Summary

The Consultant Functional Neurosurgeon provides specialized surgical and clinical care for patients with neurological movement disorders, epilepsy, chronic pain, and other conditions requiring stereotactic and functional neurosurgical procedures. The consultant works independently within a multidisciplinary team and participates in clinical, academic, and quality improvement activities.

Education/Qualifications Required:

  1. Basic medical degree from recognized institution
  2. Post-qualification certification
    • Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.  
      • USA: The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)
      • Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (RCPS-C)
      • UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register
      • Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP)
      • Western Europe: Equivalent certification to the above
  3. Fellowship en Functional/Stereotactic Neurosurgery

Experience Post-Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-board/equivalent certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland (CCST), United Kingdom (CCT) Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden OR  Switzerland,
  • Sub-Specialties: Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-sub-specialty certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, or the UK.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience after obtaining the main specialty qualification in United Kingdom (CESR) Portugal, Spain, or Italy.

License:

  • Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage patients requiring functional neurosurgical intervention.
  • Perform advanced functional and stereotactic neurosurgical procedures.
  • Conduct pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative patient management.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary clinics and case discussions.
  • Develop treatment plans with neurology, pain management, psychiatry, and rehabilitation teams.
  • Supervise junior physicians and residents.
  • Maintain accurate medical documentation and operative reports.
  • Participate in departmental on-call coverage.
  • Contribute to research, teaching, and continuous medical education.
  • Follow hospital policies, patient safety standards, and accreditation requirements.
  • The consultant should have experience in:

    • Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)
    • Movement disorder surgery
    • Epilepsy surgery
    • Stereotactic neurosurgery
    • Neuromodulation procedures
    • Intrathecal baclofen pump insertion
    • Chronic pain procedures
    • Image-guided cranial procedures
