Summary

Responsible for providing expert care for patients and provides expert surgical care for infants, children, and adolescents, covering elective, urgent, and emergency conditions. The role includes performing complex surgical procedures, managing pre- and post-operative care, and working closely with pediatric subspecialists, anesthesiologists, and critical care teams. The consultant also leads in clinical decision-making, supervises junior staff, participates in quality improvement, education, and research, and upholds the highest standards of surgical safety and patient-centered pediatric care.

Education/Qualification:

  1. Basic medical degree from recognized institution
  2. Post-qualification certification
    • Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand. 
      • USA: American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)
      • Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (FRCPC)
      • UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register
      • Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP)

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-board/equivalent certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland (CCST), United Kingdom (CCT) Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden OR  Switzerland,
    • Sub-Specialties: Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-sub-specialty certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, or the UK.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience after obtaining the main specialty qualification in United Kingdom (CESR) Portugal, Spain, or Italy
    • Sub-Specialties: Minimum of four (4) years of experience after obtaining the sub-specialty qualification in Portugal, Spain, or Italy.

License:

  • Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Managerial/Administration

  • Supports, implements, and follows all hospital, departmental, and divisional policies, procedures, and initiatives.
  • Participates in the performance management system, including peer review, productivity, and utilization review processes.
  • Assists with scheduling to always ensure adequate pediatric surgery service coverage.
  • Attends divisional meetings, multidisciplinary surgical conferences, and case review boards.
  • Assists the Division Chief in recruiting pediatric surgery staff when appropriate.
  • Contributes to strategic planning, resource allocation, and service development for the pediatric surgery department.
  • Assumes other administrative or clinical duties as assigned by the Division Chief.

Technical
Diagnoses and manages patients according to established standards of best practice for pediatric surgery. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provides expert surgical care for infants, children, and adolescents, including congenital anomalies, trauma, and complex elective and emergency conditions.
  • Performs operative procedures with precision, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and best practices.
  • Oversees preoperative assessment, perioperative management, and postoperative care, including follow-up.
  • Supervises and mentors junior medical staff and residents involved in surgical care.
  • Collaborates with anesthesiologists, pediatric intensivists, neonatologists, and other subspecialists to optimize surgical outcomes.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary meetings to plan complex cases and coordinate care.
  • Accepts clinically appropriate referrals from primary care, emergency, other specialties, and external facilities.
  • Participates in on-call duties, including emergency pediatric surgical consultations and procedures.
  • Maintains comprehensive and accurate documentation of surgical interventions, patient care, and outcomes.
  • Communicates effectively with patients’ families regarding surgical plans, risks, and postoperative care.

Quality & Safety

  • Leads or participates in quality improvement initiatives within the pediatric surgery service.
  • Supports regular audits on surgical outcomes, complication rates, and adherence to clinical guidelines.
  • Promotes evidence-based surgical practice and ensures compliance with patient safety protocols.
  • Participates in the reporting, investigation, and learning from adverse events or near misses.

Education

  • Provides teaching, mentorship, and supervision for residents, fellows, and junior staff in pediatric surgery.
  • Facilitates training on surgical techniques, perioperative care, and multidisciplinary management.
  • Participates in Continued Medical Education (CME) activities and promotes professional development within the department.
  • Contributes to clinical research, publications, and innovations in pediatric surgical care.
  • Stays current with advances in pediatric surgery, guidelines, and emerging technologies.
