Summary
Responsible for providing expert pediatric neurosurgery care to infants, children, and adolescents across elective, urgent, and emergency conditions. The role focuses on diagnosing and surgically managing congenital and acquired disorders of the brain, spine, and peripheral nervous system.
Education/Qualification:
- Basic medical degree from recognized institution
- Post-qualification certification
- Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
- USA: American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)
- Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (FRCPC)
- UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register
- Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP)
- Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-board/equivalent certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland (CCST), United Kingdom (CCT) Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden OR Switzerland,
- Sub-Specialties: Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-sub-specialty certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, or the UK.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience after obtaining the main specialty qualification in United Kingdom (CESR) Portugal, Spain, or Italy
- Sub-Specialties: Minimum of four (4) years of experience after obtaining the sub-specialty qualification in Portugal, Spain, or Italy.
License:
- Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Managerial/Administration
- Supports, implements, and follows all hospital, departmental, and divisional policies, procedures, and initiatives.
- Participates in the performance management system, including peer review, productivity, and utilization review processes.
- Assists with scheduling to always ensure adequate pediatric surgery service coverage.
- Attends divisional meetings, multidisciplinary surgical conferences, and case review boards.
- Assists the Division Chief in recruiting pediatric surgery staff when appropriate.
- Contributes to strategic planning, resource allocation, and service development for the pediatric surgery department.
- Assumes other administrative or clinical duties as assigned by the Division Chief.
Technical
Diagnoses and manages patients according to established standards of best practice for pediatric neurosurgery. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Provides expert neurosurgery care for infants, children, and adolescents, including congenital anomalies, trauma, tumors, hydrocephalus, spinal disorders, and complex elective and emergency conditions.
- Performs pediatric neurosurgical procedures with precision, following approved safety standards and clinical protocols.
- Leads preoperative assessment, perioperative planning, and postoperative management, including inpatient care and outpatient follow-up.
- Supervises and mentors junior physicians and residents involved in neurosurgical care.
- Works closely with anesthesiologists, pediatric intensivists, neonatologists, and relevant subspecialists to support optimal outcomes.
- Participates in multidisciplinary case discussions for complex neurosurgical patients.
- Accepts appropriate referrals from emergency services, inpatient teams, outpatient clinics, and external facilities.
- Participates in on-call coverage, including emergency neurosurgical consultations and procedures.
- Maintains accurate, timely clinical documentation of procedures, care plans, and outcomes.
- Communicates clearly with patients’ families about diagnoses, surgical plans, risks, and postoperative expectations.
Quality & Safety
- Leads or participates in quality improvement initiatives within the pediatric neurosurgery service.
- Supports regular audits on surgical outcomes, complication rates, and adherence to clinical guidelines.
- Promotes evidence-based surgical practice and ensures compliance with patient safety protocols.
- Participates in the reporting, investigation, and learning from adverse events or near misses.
Education
- Provides teaching, mentorship, and supervision for residents, fellows, and junior staff in pediatric neurosurgery.
- Facilitates training on surgical techniques, perioperative care, and multidisciplinary management.
- Participates in Continued Medical Education (CME) activities and promotes professional development within the department.
- Contributes to clinical research, publications, and innovations in pediatric surgical care.
- Stays current with advances in pediatric surgery, guidelines, and emerging technologies.
