Summary

The Consultant in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit is responsible for managing critically ill surgical patients, including trauma, post-operative, and complex surgical cases. The consultant provides advanced critical care, coordinates with surgical teams, and ensures seamless perioperative management. The role also includes teaching, research, and supporting HMC’s mission as a leader in critical care medicine.

Education/Qualifications Required:

  1. Basic medical degree from recognized institution
  2. Post-qualification certification
    • Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.  
      • USA: The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)
      • Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (FRCPC)
      • UK and Ireland: CCT/CCST/CESR and joined the Specialty Register
      • Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP)
      • Western Europe: Equivalent certification to the above

Experience Post-Qualifications:

  • Minimum Three (3) years after board/equivalent certification in USA, Canada, Ireland, UK, Australia, New Zealand and France (DES) and other above listed countries.
  • Minimum One (1) year experience at Public/ Government Hospital or Teaching / Academic institution

License:

  • Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.

Job Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Manage critically ill surgical and trauma patients requiring intensive monitoring and intervention.
  • Lead SICU rounds, coordinate perioperative management, and guide surgical teams in post-operative care.
  • Perform advanced ICU procedures such as airway management, invasive monitoring, and mechanical ventilation.
  • Collaborate with surgeons across specialties (trauma, neurosurgery, cardiovascular, transplant, etc.) for optimal patient care.
  • Supervise, mentor, and train residents, fellows, and SICU staff.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of SICU protocols and guidelines.
  • Participate in research, academic activities, and hospital quality improvement projects.
  • Ensure adherence to patient safety standards, ethical practice, and hospital regulations.
  • Provide leadership in disaster preparedness, trauma response, and complex surgical emergencies.
