The Consultant in Fetal Medicine provides assessment, diagnosis, and management of fetal conditions and high-risk pregnancies.
Education/Qualification:
Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
- Basic medical degree from recognized institution
- Post-qualification certification
- USA: American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG)
- Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate in Obstetrics and Gynecology (FRCSC)
- UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register in Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College in in Obstetrics and Gynecology (FRACP)
Experience:

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide expert assessment, diagnosis, and management of pregnancies complicated by fetal abnormalities, genetic conditions, multiple pregnancies, fetal growth disorders, and maternal medical conditions affecting pregnancy.
- Perform and interpret advanced fetal ultrasound examinations, including detailed anatomical scans, fetal echocardiography (where appropriately trained), Doppler studies, and assessment of fetal growth and well-being.
- Conduct prenatal diagnostic procedures as appropriate, including amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), and other fetal investigations.
- Develop individualized care plans and provide ongoing surveillance for high-risk pregnancies throughout the antenatal period.
- Provide preconception and prenatal counseling regarding fetal abnormalities, genetic risks, pregnancy complications, treatment options, prognosis, and expected outcomes.
- Work closely with obstetricians, neonatologists, pediatric subspecialists, genetic counselors, radiologists, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver coordinated multidisciplinary care.
- Lead specialized fetal medicine clinics, review referrals, and provide expert consultation for complex maternal and fetal cases.
- Participate in multidisciplinary fetal meetings to discuss diagnosis, management strategies, delivery planning, and neonatal care requirements.
- Perform or support fetal therapeutic interventions and procedures where indicated and within the consultant’s scope of practice.
- Monitor maternal and fetal outcomes and modify management plans according to clinical progress and evolving diagnostic findings.
- Communicate sensitively with patients and families regarding diagnoses, risks, treatment options, and potential outcomes.
- Supervise and provide clinical guidance to junior doctors, residents, fellows, sonographers, and medical students.
- Participate in clinical teaching, case discussions, training activities, and mentorship programs.
- Contribute to the development of fetal medicine protocols, clinical pathways, quality improvement initiatives, and service development programs.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
- Comply with patient safety requirements, informed consent policies, infection prevention measures, and accreditation standards.
- Participate in clinical audits, research activities, morbidity and mortality reviews, and continuous professional development to advance fetal medicine services.
