Summary
The Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Consultant provides specialist assessment, diagnosis, and non-surgical management of infants, children, and adolescents with physical disabilities and functional impairments. The role involves evaluating and treating congenital, developmental, neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, traumatic, and acquired conditions.
Education/Qualification:
- Basic medical degree from recognized institution
- Post-qualification certification
- Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
- USA: American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR),
- Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
- UK and Ireland: CCT/CCST with entry on the GMC Specialist Register (Rehabilitation Medicine).
- Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in Rehabilitation Medicine.
- Western Europe: Equivalent specialist certification in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) recognized by the relevant national authority.
- Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-board/equivalent certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland (CCST), United Kingdom (CCT) Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden OR Switzerland,
- Sub-Specialties: Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-sub-specialty certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, or the UK.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience after obtaining the main specialty qualification in United Kingdom (CESR) Portugal, Spain, or Italy.
- Sub-Specialties: Minimum of four (4) years of experience after obtaining the sub-specialty qualification in Portugal, Spain, or Italy.
License:
- Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide consultant-level assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based management of infants, children, and adolescents with congenital, developmental, neurological, neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, and acquired disabilities.
- Develop individualized rehabilitation plans to improve functional independence, mobility, participation, and quality of life.
- Lead multidisciplinary rehabilitation programs in collaboration with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, psychologists, nurses, orthotists, prosthetists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Evaluate and manage pediatric conditions including cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, developmental delay, genetic disorders, and other complex rehabilitation needs.
- Perform and supervise rehabilitation procedures, including spasticity assessment and management, botulinum toxin injections where appropriate, orthotic and assistive device recommendations, and functional mobility assessments.
- Monitor patient progress through regular follow-up and modify treatment plans based on clinical outcomes and functional goals.
- Conduct inpatient consultations, outpatient clinics, and multidisciplinary ward rounds while maintaining continuity of care.
- Accept referrals from emergency medicine, primary care, pediatric subspecialties, and external healthcare facilities, providing timely specialist consultation.
- Supervise, mentor, and support specialists, residents, fellows, and junior medical staff, maintaining responsibility for the quality of care delivered.
- Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences, clinical governance activities, peer review, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical audits.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive medical documentation in accordance with Department of Health Abu Dhabi (DOH) regulations and hospital policies.
- Obtain informed consent and communicate diagnoses, treatment plans, rehabilitation goals, and long-term care plans with patients and their families.
- Participate in the consultant on-call rota and provide emergency consultation as required.
- Support departmental education, research, continuing medical education (CME), and professional development activities.
- Comply with all SEHA, DOH Abu Dhabi, and hospital policies related to patient safety, infection prevention, quality standards, and ethical clinical practice.
