Summary

The purpose of this role is Accurate and timely data related to cancer patients will ultimately help in detecting cancer earlier, improving services, treatments and increased survival rates, ensuring that the HMC Clinical Cancer Registry is maintained to the fullest extent with accurate and timely data that ultimately assists in the provision of cancer services at HMC. The CTR examines medical and pathology records to determine patient eligibility for the cancer registry. They make abstracts of medical records by translating the medical terminology into standardized codes that record the patient’s diagnosis and treatment information. protecting patient information.

Education/Qualifications Required:

Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare related field plus Cancer / Tumor Registry Course
      OR
  •  Bachelor’s Degree plus Internationally certified Cancer / Tumor Registry Course

Experience Post-Qualifications:

  • Minimum eight (8) years experience in healthcare related field of which 3 years in Healthcare Data Management for Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare related field.
    OR
  • Minimum nine (9) years’ experience in Healthcare Data Management for a Bachelor’s Degree.

Job Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Procedurally Identify, compile, update and maintain patient data from different reliable sources.
  • Abstracts data into specialized medical software with supporting narrative information for, patient demographics, diagnostic procedures, history and extent of disease, treatments, outcomes, follow-up data, physicians, and related information from various medical records. Perform re-abstracting and case finding for special projects as assigned.
  • Abstracts consistent and quality data, at a rate of 6-8 cases maintaining an error rate of 10% or less. Maintains abstracting backlog of less than six (6) months.
  • Assign appropriate codes for treatments, procedures and diagnoses according to coding requirements, classification systems and standard setters. Review data for completeness, consistency, and accuracy, pursuing additional information from data sources as necessary; updates/corrects data as needed.
  • Performs life-time follow-up on the patient’s health, vital status, treatment and progression of disease to provide cancer incidence, treatment and outcome information to appropriate data bases, for quality improvement activities, administrative planning and marketing, and support programs.
  • Monthly case finding, review various reports, death certificates, disease indices, radiation oncology treatment records, radiologic diagnoses, or physician logs to identify possible cancer cases.
  • Provide input into study/review planning, report writing, data analysis and prepare reports within the parameters of the studies and other guidelines, under the supervision of manager.
  • Prepare narrative reports and graphic presentations; design tables, charts and graphs of tumour registry data for special studies and annual report as requested.
  • Act as a liaison to the Ministry of Public Health National Cancer Registry regarding matters related to cancer registry data.
  • Accurately prepares and codes abstracts according to principles of ICD-O, SEER Summary Staging, AJCC Staging System, FORDS, Collaborative Staging System, FCDS and the CoC. Summarizes patients’ clinical history, management of the disease process, and all clinical observations and findings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
