Summary

The Consultant in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia provides expert assessment, diagnosis, and management of anesthesia care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents undergoing cardiac and cardiothoracic procedures.

Education/Qualification:

Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.

  • Basic medical degree from recognized institution
  • Post-qualification certification 
    • USA: American Board of Anesthesia (ABA)
    • Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate in Anesthesia (FRCPC)
    • UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register in Anesthesia
    • Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College in Anesthesia (FRACP)

Experience:

      • Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-board/equivalent certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland (CCST), United Kingdom (CCT) Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden OR  Switzerland
      • Sub-Specialties: Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-sub-specialty certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, or the UK.

License:

  • Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess and optimize neonates, infants, children, and adolescents with congenital and acquired cardiac conditions before surgical and interventional procedures
  • Develop individualized anesthetic plans based on patient age, cardiac physiology, surgical complexity, and associated medical conditions
  • Administer general anesthesia for pediatric cardiac surgeries, cardiac catheterization procedures, and other specialized interventions
  • Provide advanced intraoperative monitoring, including invasive hemodynamic monitoring, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), and management of cardiopulmonary bypass physiology when qualified
  • Manage complex airway challenges, hemodynamic instability, arrhythmias, and perioperative cardiac emergencies
  • Provide anesthesia care during procedures requiring extracorporeal support and collaborate with perfusion teams during cardiopulmonary bypass
  • Deliver postoperative pain management and coordinate transfer of care to the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit
  • Collaborate closely with pediatric cardiac surgeons, pediatric cardiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, nurses, and other allied healthcare professionals
  • Participate in preoperative conferences, multidisciplinary cardiac meetings, and perioperative planning discussions
  • Provide emergency anesthesia support for urgent and high-risk pediatric cardiac cases
  • Maintain accurate anesthesia records, clinical documentation, and procedural reports
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, research, and development of cardiac anesthesia protocols
  • Supervise and train anesthesia residents, fellows, and junior medical staff
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, patient safety standards, infection prevention protocols, and pediatric anesthesia guidelines
