Summary

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Consultant provides specialist emergency care for infants, children, and adolescents presenting with acute illnesses, injuries, and life-threatening conditions. The role involves rapid assessment, diagnosis, stabilization, and treatment of pediatric emergencies while ensuring timely interventions and coordination of multidisciplinary care.

Education/Qualification:

Qualification Source from: North America

  • Basic medical degree from recognized institution
  • Post-qualification certification 
    • USA: American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM)
    • Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate in Emergency Medicine (FRCPC)

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-board/equivalent certification in Canada and USA 
  • Sub-Specialties: Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-sub-specialty certification in Canada and USA

License:

  • Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage infants, children, and adolescents presenting with acute medical, surgical, traumatic, and behavioral emergencies
  • Perform rapid triage, stabilization, and resuscitation of critically ill or injured pediatric patients
  • Manage pediatric emergencies including respiratory distress, sepsis, shock, trauma, poisoning, seizures, allergic reactions, and cardiac emergencies
  • Perform emergency procedures including airway management, intubation, vascular access, procedural sedation, lumbar puncture, wound management, and fracture stabilization
  • Interpret laboratory results and diagnostic investigations, including X-rays, ultrasound, and other emergency imaging
  • Determine appropriate patient disposition, including discharge, hospital admission, intensive care transfer, or referral to pediatric subspecialists
  • Provide family-centered care, communicating diagnoses, treatment plans, and follow-up instructions clearly
  • Collaborate with pediatric surgeons, intensivists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, nurses, and allied health professionals
  • Lead and participate in pediatric emergency response and trauma teams
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation and emergency department records
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, patient safety programs, and emergency preparedness activities
  • Supervise and train junior physicians, residents, fellows, and emergency department staff
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, infection control measures, and pediatric emergency care standards
