Summary
Responsible for overseeing clinical and laboratory aspects of transfusion services. This role involves ensuring the safe, effective, and appropriate use of blood and blood components, managing complex transfusion-related issues, leading transfusion safety initiatives, and contributing to clinical governance, quality improvement, and education.
Education/Qualifications Required:
- Basic medical degree from recognized institution
- Post-qualification certification
- Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
- USA: The American Board of Transfusion Medicine (ABTM)
- Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (FRCPC – Transfusion Medicine )
- UK and Ireland: CCT/CCST Specialist Register – Transfusion Medicine
- Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College – (FRACP – Transfusion Medicine)
- Western Europe: Equivalent certification to the above
- Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
Experience Post Qualifications
- Minimum Three (3) years after board/equivalent certification in USA, Canada, Ireland, UK, Australia, New Zealand and France (DES).
- Minimum Five (5) years after board/equivalent certification in Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Austria, Netherlands, Greece and France (DIS).
- Fellowship in Transfusion Medicine or equivalent subspecialty credential
- Strong knowledge of immunohematology, clinical transfusion practice, and regulatory frameworks.
License:
- Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- To provide diagnostic and consultative services to physicians and patients in accordance with privileges granted.
- Provide expert consultation on complex transfusion cases (e.g., massive transfusion, alloimmunization, hemolytic disease, autoimmune hemolysis, and rare blood group management).
- Guide transfusion practices across the institution in collaboration with clinical departments.
- Support appropriate use of blood components and alternatives through evidence-based guidelines.
- Oversee patient blood management (PBM) programs.
- Participate in and lead transfusion-related morbidity/mortality reviews.
- Supervise and support the operations of the blood bank laboratory.
- Oversee serological problem-solving, antibody identification, and compatibility testing.
- Ensure availability and safe inventory management of blood components.
- Monitor and report transfusion reactions and adverse events; lead investigations and root cause analyses.
- Provide oversight for therapeutic apheresis and cellular therapy services (if applicable).
- Participates in committees and other administrative functions as needed
- Performs special procedures as required
