Summary

The Senior Consultant in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit is responsible for managing critically ill surgical patients, including trauma, post-operative, and complex surgical cases. The consultant provides advanced critical care, coordinates with surgical teams, and ensures seamless perioperative management. The role also includes teaching, research, and supporting HMC’s mission as a leader in critical care medicine.

Education/Qualifications Required:

  1. Basic medical degree from recognized institution
  2. Post-qualification certification
    • Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.  
      • USA: The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)
      • Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (FRCPC)
      • UK and Ireland: CCT/CCST/CESR and joined the Specialty Register
      • Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP)
      • Western Europe: Equivalent certification to the above

Experience Post-Qualifications:

Experience in clinical experience in intensive care medicine after board certification.

License:

  • Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.

Job Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Provide comprehensive care for critically ill adult patients with life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Lead daily rounds, multidisciplinary discussions, and care planning in the MICU.
  • Perform advanced procedures such as intubation, mechanical ventilation, central line placement, and renal replacement therapies.
  • Collaborate with subspecialists including cardiology, nephrology, pulmonology, and infectious diseases.
  • Supervise and mentor residents, fellows, and ICU staff in clinical practice.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor evidence-based ICU protocols and guidelines.
  • Participate in clinical research, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, patient safety standards, and international critical care guidelines.
  • Provide leadership in emergency and mass-casualty preparedness.
