Summary
The Consultant in Anesthesia and Pain Management provides specialist care for patients requiring anesthesia for surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures, along with expert management of acute, chronic, and complex pain conditions. The role covers preoperative assessment, intraoperative anesthesia care, and postoperative recovery, while ensuring patient safety and adherence to hospital clinical standards. The consultant works across multidisciplinary teams to support perioperative care pathways and improve pain outcomes.
Education/Qualification:
Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
- Basic medical degree from recognized institution
- Post-qualification certification
- USA: American Board of Anesthesia (ABA)
- Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate in Anesthesia (FRCPC)
- UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register in Anesthesia
- Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College in Anesthesia (FRACP)
Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-board/equivalent certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland (CCST), United Kingdom (CCT) Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden OR Switzerland,
- Sub-Specialties: Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-sub-specialty certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, or the UK.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience after obtaining the main specialty qualification in United Kingdom (CESR) Portugal, Spain, or Italy.
- Sub-Specialties: Minimum of four (4) years of experience after obtaining the sub-specialty qualification in Portugal, Spain, or Italy.
License:
- Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct pre-anesthesia assessments, including medical history review, physical examination, and risk evaluation
- Develop individualized anesthesia plans for elective and emergency procedures
- Administer general, regional, and monitored anesthesia care for surgical and non-surgical interventions
- Monitor patients during procedures, managing airway, ventilation, circulation, and physiological stability
- Manage perioperative complications and respond to anesthesia-related emergencies
- Provide acute pain management for hospitalized patients and post-surgical cases
- Manage chronic pain conditions using pharmacological and interventional approaches
- Perform regional anesthesia techniques such as nerve blocks, spinal, epidural, and catheter-based analgesia when indicated
- Optimize multimodal pain strategies tailored to patient needs and clinical context
- Provide safe postoperative care, including recovery monitoring and pain control
- Ensure proper handover of patients between operating theatre, recovery, ICU, and wards
- Work within clinical governance frameworks such as those used by SEHA when applicable
- Maintain accurate anesthesia and pain management documentation
- Follow medication safety protocols, including controlled drug regulations and dosing accuracy
- Collaborate with surgeons, intensivists, emergency physicians, nurses, and allied health teams
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, perioperative planning meetings, and pain service reviews
- Contribute to quality improvement, audits, and patient safety initiatives
- Supervise junior doctors, residents, and anesthesia trainees
- Educate patients and families on anesthesia risks, pain control plans, and recovery expectations
