Summary

The Trauma Surgery Consultant provides specialist surgical care for patients with acute traumatic injuries, including life-threatening and multi-system trauma. The role involves rapid assessment, resuscitation, operative and non-operative management of injuries, and coordination of multidisciplinary trauma care. The consultant leads trauma response teams and ensures timely surgical intervention, stabilization, and ongoing surgical management in line with hospital trauma protocols.

Education/Qualification:

Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.

  • Basic medical degree from recognized institution
  • Post-qualification certification 
    • USA: American Board of Surgery (ABS)
    • Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate in General Surgery (FRCSC)
    • UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register in Surgery
    • Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College in General Surgery (FRACP)

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-board/equivalent certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland (CCST), United Kingdom (CCT) Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden OR  Switzerland,
  • Sub-Specialties: Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-sub-specialty certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, or the UK.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience after obtaining the main specialty qualification in United Kingdom (CESR) Portugal, Spain, or Italy.
  • Sub-Specialties: Minimum of four (4) years of experience after obtaining the sub-specialty qualification in Portugal, Spain, or Italy.

License:

  • Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead assessment, resuscitation, and management of major trauma patients in emergency and acute care settings
  • Perform primary and secondary surveys following trauma protocols and prioritize life-saving interventions
  • Provide operative management for traumatic injuries, including abdominal, thoracic, vascular, and soft tissue trauma
  • Manage complex polytrauma cases and coordinate care across surgical and critical care specialties
  • Decide on operative versus non-operative management strategies based on clinical assessment and imaging
  • Perform emergency surgical procedures, including damage control surgery when required
  • Manage postoperative care, complications, and surgical recovery in trauma patients
  • Interpret and act on diagnostic imaging such as CT scans, X-rays, and ultrasound in trauma settings
  • Work closely with emergency medicine, anesthesia, orthopedics, neurosurgery, and critical care teams
  • Lead trauma calls and coordinate multidisciplinary trauma team responses
  • Provide specialist surgical input for intensive care unit (ICU) trauma patients
  • Ensure timely escalation of care and transfer to higher-level trauma centers when needed
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation, operative notes, and trauma records
  • Participate in trauma audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality improvement programs
  • Contribute to trauma protocol development and hospital-wide emergency preparedness systems
  • Supervise and train junior surgeons, residents, and surgical fellows
  • Communicate clearly with patients and families regarding injury severity, treatment options, and prognosis
