Summary
The Consultant in Pediatric Anesthesia provides expert assessment, diagnosis, and management of anesthesia care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents undergoing anesthesia procedures.
Education/Qualification:
Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
- Basic medical degree from recognized institution
- Post-qualification certification
- USA: American Board of Anesthesia (ABA)
- Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate in Pediatric Anesthesia (FRCPC)
- UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register in Pediatric Anesthesia
- Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College in Pediatric Anesthesia (FRACP)
Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-board/equivalent certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland (CCST), United Kingdom (CCT) Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden OR Switzerland,
- Sub-Specialties: Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-sub-specialty certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, or the UK.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience after obtaining the main specialty qualification in United Kingdom (CESR) Portugal, Spain, or Italy.
- Sub-Specialties: Minimum of four (4) years of experience after obtaining the sub-specialty qualification in Portugal, Spain, or Italy.
License:
- Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive anesthesia care to neonates, infants, children, and adolescents undergoing surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures.
- Conduct thorough pre-anesthetic assessments, review medical histories, evaluate patient risk factors, and formulate individualized anesthesia plans.
- Administer and monitor general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and sedation techniques in accordance with hospital and DOH guidelines.
- Manage airway care, ventilation, fluid therapy, pain control, and perioperative hemodynamic stability in pediatric patients.
- Provide anesthesia services for elective and emergency procedures across a range of pediatric surgical specialties.
- Manage critically ill pediatric patients requiring anesthesia support, including those in intensive care, emergency, and neonatal settings as appropriate.
- Respond to emergency situations, including difficult airway management, resuscitation, and perioperative complications.
- Monitor patients during the intraoperative and immediate postoperative periods, recognizing and managing anesthesia-related complications.
- Develop and implement postoperative pain management strategies, including multimodal analgesia and regional anesthesia techniques.
- Provide consultation services to pediatric inpatient units, emergency departments, intensive care units, neonatal units, and other specialties within the healthcare system.
- Work closely with pediatric surgeons, neonatologists, pediatricians, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals to provide coordinated multidisciplinary care.
- Communicate clearly with patients’ families regarding anesthesia plans, potential risks, expected outcomes, and postoperative care.
- Promote a collaborative, team-based approach to patient care within a multicultural healthcare environment.
- Supervise and support the clinical work of junior doctors, residents, fellows, and medical students.
- Provide clinical teaching, case discussions, and mentorship to junior medical staff and trainees.
- Participate in peer review, multidisciplinary meetings, morbidity and mortality reviews, and performance management activities.
- Contribute to the development of anesthesia protocols, clinical pathways, patient safety initiatives, and service improvement programs.
- Assist with recruitment, orientation, credentialing, and professional development of medical staff as required.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation in accordance with hospital and DOH standards.
- Comply with hospital policies, informed consent requirements, patient safety standards, infection prevention protocols, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement projects, clinical audits, research activities, safety reporting, and incident reviews to support continuous improvement in pediatric anesthesia care.
