Summary

Responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of many medical emergencies. Can refer people to other health professionals for further treatment.

Education/Qualifications Required:

  1. Basic medical degree from recognized institution
  2. Post-qualification certification
    • Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.  
      • USA: The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABEM)
      • Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (FRCPS or CCFP-EM)
      • UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST and joined Specialist Register
      • Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP)
      • Western Europe: Equivalent certification to the above
  3. Speaking Arabic Fluently is a MUST

Experience Post-Qualifications:

  • Minimum Three (3) years after board/equivalent certification
  • Minimum One (1) year experience at Government/Public Hospital or Academic/Teaching Hospital

License:

  • Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.

Job Responsibilities and Duties:

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provides required patient care and management in the field of Adult Emergency Medicine in accordance with standards of medical care laid down by HMC.
  • Evaluates and stabilizes patients present in the emergency department with an emergency medical condition.
  • Treats adult patients with acute illnesses or injuries which require immediate medical attention by diagnosing the emergency medical conditions and stabilizing the patient for definitive care.
  • Prevents diagnoses and manages acute and urgent aspects of illness and injury affecting adult patients across a full spectrum of undifferentiated physical and behavioral disorders.
  • Attends all adult patients, treats their illnesses and arranges for their disposition – either admitting them to an appropriate service or releasing them after treatment with follow-up plans.
  • Performs a variety of advanced procedural skills including surgical procedures, trauma resuscitation, advanced cardiac life support and advanced airway management.
  • Provides emergency coverage for adults in the hospital emergency department.
  • Assumes responsibility for patients under his care. liaises with various support service departments and medical specializations to provide appropriate and timely medical care, in accordance with the standards laid down by HMC.
  • Complies with all hospital standards and policies pertaining to acceptance, eligibility, admission processes, consultation, daily patient care, operating room, outpatient practices, and patient discharge.
  • Initiates investigations and ensures findings are recorded. Assesses patients’ diseases or conditions to determine appropriate therapeutic modalities/procedures.
  • Documents findings in medical records.
  • Ensures appropriate patient preparation for procedures/surgery and performs surgical procedures as indicated in the signed clinical privilege form.
  • Follows up on investigation results and modifies treatment accordingly.

Academic Responsibilities

  • Directs and advises junior staff on patient management, especially in the field of Adult Emergency Medicine.
  • Guides and actively participates in the training and teaching of Residents, Fellows, Assistant Consultants and junior staff.
  • Keeps abreast with all the latest techniques and developments, especially in the field of Adult Emergency Medicine, following and implementing them on a selective basis to improve technical standards.
  • Actives participates in the educational activities and training programs of the department.
  • Participates in national and international medical conferences.

Research Responsibilities

  • Participates in clinical, basic and translation research projects and publishes papers in accordance with Research Advisory Council Policy in order to advance knowledge, improve the quality of post graduate education and contribute to the national and international recognition of HMC

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Undertakes the administrative duties assigned by Head of Section of Chair of the department
  • Participates in all mandatory departmental activities and serves on departmental and hospital committees, as required
  • Assists the department in the development and implementation of techniques and practices that help maximize the utilization of all resources within the department and across the hospital
  • Abides by the current hospital and medical staff bylaws, all relevant rules, regulations and policies and keeps updated of any changes that might occur
