Critical Care Medicine – Chairman
Summary
Responsible for the overall management of Critical Care Medicine Department staff as stipulated in the Employee Relations Manual and the Medical Staff Bylaws. Serves as an advocate for Critical Care Medicine Department’s interests in addition to clinical duties as Consultant.
Education / Qualification Required:
- Basic medical degree from recognized institution
- Post-qualification certification
- Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
- USA: The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)
- Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (RCPS-C)
- UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register
- Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP)
- Western Europe: Equivalent certification to the above
- Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
Experience Post-Qualifications:
- Minimum Ten (10) years of clinical experience post certification in a subspecialty out of which the minimum of 4 years in the Admin Capacity department plus post-training experience North America, Western Europe, Australia, or New Zealand.
License:
Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical Responsibilities
- Performs clinical duties and actively engages in clinical practice.
- Collaborates with Nursing, Clinical Services, Administration, and Support Services in the provision of patient care.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Develops Critical Care Medicine Department Strategic Plan and Goals and Objectives in conformance with the overall strategic plan of Medical Affairs and provides bi-annual reports on the progress of the Goals and Objectives.
- Organizes, supervises, monitors and maintains medical and clinical services and programs to provide high quality patient care. Ensures ethical adherence in Critical Care Medicine Department. Ensures adequate and uninterrupted supervision of Critical Care Medicine at all times.
- Responsible for the selection, recruitment and retention of competent professional staff in Critical Care Medicine Department through effective use of ongoing credentialing, review of privileges and assessment of all staff in the Department. Evaluates adequacy of staffing. Ensures that there exist appropriate Departmental mechanisms and processes to provide physician coverage at all times.
- Responsible for the preparation and management of the annual operating budget of the Department and for the efficient and cost effective operation of Critical Care Medicine within allocated resources in accordance with outcome measures defined by Medical and Clinical Affairs.
- Prepares the annual Capital Equipment budget for the medical and clinical units associated with Critical Care Medicine Department, in conjunction with Nursing Affairs and Clinical Services where applicable.
- Conducts annual evaluation reports of Department staff, in consultation with Section Heads where applicable, and makes recommendations to Medical and Clinical Affairs. Based on Critical Care Medicine evaluation, determines the increment of Critical Care Medicine staff. Professional leave, business leave and extra professional leave will be based on Critical Care Medicine evaluation. Annual performance bonus will be based on evaluation and appraisal. Maintains just and fair treatment of all Critical Care Medicine staff.
- Responsible for the overall quality of patient care. Supports and promotes the implementation of Quality / Performance Improvement Programs.
- Responsible for developing and implementing key performance and clinical indicators and relevant benchmarking of departmental clinical outcomes with international organizations.
- Responsible for establishing structures that ensure practices by Critical Care Medicine staff promote a culture of excellence, are in line with the Hospital’s values and continuously improve the patients’ experience.
- Responsible for organizing, supporting and promoting activities by Critical Care Medicine staff that promote community involvement and responsibility.
- Responsible for enforcing and monitoring adherence of all members of Critical Care Medicine Department to the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules and Regulations, and Hospital’s policies and procedures.
- Chairs twice quarterly departmental meetings to review and discuss patient care, policies, education, research, and administrative activities.
- Participates as a member of the Medical Advisory Council.
- Participates actively in the development of the Institution and in particular Critical Care Medicine Department and ensures the fulfilment of the interest of Critical Care Medicine Department and staff and advocates the same within the institution and Administration.
- Keeps positive harmony in Critical Care Medicine Department and with other Departments.
- Ensures optimal bed and clinic utilization in Critical Care Medicine Department.
- Recommends appointment of Deputy Chairman, Head of Section, medical and Program Directors in Critical Care Medicine Department.
- Establishes guidelines for granting of clinical privileges; reviews credentials of new applicants to Medical Staff and makes recommendations regarding appointment and clinical privileges; and monitors adherence of Department members to granted clinical privileges. Recommends to the Executive Director, Medical and Clinical Affairs immediate modification of clinical privileges for members of Critical Care Medicine Department whenever necessary to ensure patient safety.
- Acts as the link through which all departmental communications and transactions are conducted.
- Acts as the ambassador of the department to the Organization and outside agencies, associations and the community
- Undertakes departmental specific duties and responsibilities
Research Responsibilities
- Promotes medical research initiatives in Critical Care Medicine Department in compliance with the guidelines of the Research Advisory Council.
Education Responsibilities
- Promotes the provision of Postgraduate Training Programs. Continuing Medical Education activities and other required educational and training courses; and ensures the availability of mechanisms for evaluating and reporting such activities.
- Promotes the mentoring and training of junior staff, trainees and medical students by staff
- Participates in self and others’ education, training and development, as applicable.
- Performs other related duties, responsibilities, and assignments as required.
- Follows all Hospital related policies and procedures.
